Anthony Richardson’s season is likely over before it ever really get started.
The fourth overall pick in this year’s draft is “probably” going to miss the rest of the year and have to undergo surgery on his shoulder in the near future, Colts owner Jim Irsay told ESPN.
Richardson suffered an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder during Week 5 against the Titans.
The Colts placed the quarterback on the injured reserve last week and sought a number of medical opinions to decide the best course of action.
Unfortunately for the Colts, the signs are pointing to surgery.
“The most likelihood is he’s probably going to be gone for the year,” Irsay said. “I mean, it’s not definite but [he] probably misses this year and we’re going to have to contend with that factor.”
Part of the equation is whether Richardson will undergo surgery or continue with rehab.
The Colts are being cautious with the whole situation since Richardson is one of the franchise’s key pieces going forward.
“There’s debate going, but it’s probably going to lead toward surgery in the next week or so,” Irsay said. “We’re just trying to figure out exactly how and when and what we want to do and what Anthony wants to do.”
In four games this season, Richardson threw for 577 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
He also ran for 136 yards and four touchdowns.
Richardson also missed the Colts’ Week 3 game against the Ravens while recovering from a concussion.
Despite the situation with Richardson, the Colts owner remained confident that they have a team that can make an impact this season.
“We think we have an outstanding football team still,” Irsay said. “We’ll take them one at a time.”
The Colts fell to the Jaguars, 37-20, in Week 6, with backup Gardner Minshew at quarterback.
Indianapolis is 3-3 this season, which has them tied with the Texans for second place in the AFC South.
The Colts host the Browns on Sunday.
