Weird But True

I met my BFF after seeing her on a Times Square billboard — she looked really cool

Vienna Skye was in Times Square when she spotted her future best friend.

The catch? The young model with fiery orange and yellow hair was pictured on an NYC billboard.

It wasn’t the first time she had seen the LA-based model — named Liv Huffman — who had appeared on a poster for American Eagle.

Now, the pair are the best of pals, their chance meet-cute a “fun aspect” of their friendship.

“It’s just so interesting, especially because we met from a billboard and she lives so far away,” Skye, 25, told The Post. “A couple of years ago, that wouldn’t be possible. It’s just such a new way to make friends.”

When she spotting Huffman’s ad, Skye thought it was unusual for an advertisement to include a model’s Instagram handle because they often “don’t get any sort of recognition.”

“I was like, ‘Oh, this is so interesting, and she looks so cool.'” the New Yorker recalled, adding that the pair were both interested in fashion and beauty so she pressed “follow.”

That fateful day in 2019 was, unbeknownst to them, the beginning of a tight-knit friendship with Huffman, who she calls an inspiration, despite living thousands of miles apart.

“When I saw that, I never thought we were going to become best friends,” she added. “It’s just so random that it worked out like that.”

“But everything happens for a reason – I feel like I was meant to meet her,” Skye told Metro.

Upon following Huffman on Instagram, Skye, who was a student in New York at the time, realized she and Huffman shared the same interests after watching her YouTube videos.

“You could tell she just seemed really friendly and funny too – I thought she was the type of person I could be friends with,” Skye told Metro.

The pair began exchanging messages, hoping to meet in person one day.

That same year, Skye’s then-boyfriend was traveling to California to host an event for his clothing brand, inviting her to tag along and making the “perfect opportunity” for the long-distance digital pals to meet.

Huffman’s Instagram handle was printed on the in-store poster.

“I worried it might be really awkward, but it wasn’t at all,” she said. “We weren’t together for long – we just had time to say ‘hi’ – but I had a good feeling about her. I knew I wanted to see her again.”

Later that year, Skye booked tickets to see her boyfriend again on the West Coast, but the couple had split.

Not wanting to waste her ticket, she headed to the Golden State to see an old friend and made plans to see Huffman in the process.

“We asked her if she wanted to go for some drinks, and miraculously, she was free, and was a five-minute drive away,” Skye recalled. “We went to a bar and had such a fun night – she was silly and fun and it was just so easy.”

Then, the next night, they saw each other again for a Halloween party, spending the entire evening with one another and even hitting up Taco Bell for some late-night grub.

“Now, she’s my best friend,” she said, adding that the duo vacations and spends their birthdays together.

“She’s got a unique personal style – she’s taught me so much about fashion and beauty and helped me to become more creative,” she continued

The best friends are each other’s “cheerleaders.”

“But she’s also one of those friends you don’t need much of a social battery for. We can get together, and just sit and watch TV, and still be having the best time,” said Skye.

They’re “each other’s biggest cheerleaders” — Huffman even attended the New York Fashion Week shows Skye walked in, “cheering and screaming” her name.

“We don’t really drink, so one of our favorite things to do together is eat. We’re always sending each other TikTok videos of places we want to try when we get together,” Skye said.
