The city has a village feel with a beautiful old town, excellent wine bars (no surprise there being the home of port) and rooftops to enjoy views and sunsets from. Restaurants line the river and a weekend in the city requires sampling a francesinha – we can point you in the direction of the best ones. Arching over the cities river is the impressive double-decked metal Dom Luis I bridge, linking the medieval city with Vila Nova de Gaia. Dotted around here you will find centuries old port firms, founded by British merchant families and are still owned by their successors to this day.
